Letter to Minuteman by Eileen Jay

Jay Outlines Reasons for Running

I am excited to be a candidate for one of two seats on the School Committee in the March election. My professional background and many years of active involvement with Lexington schools are well-matched to the needs facing our schools.

As a professional educational researcher, I bring in-depth understanding of teaching and learning. I have a Doctorate in Education from Harvard where I conducted research that delved deeply into how students learn. I am excited about the opportunity to work with our new superintendent as she forms an educational vision for our schools, and hope that my research insights could be beneficial.

Having been actively involved with Lexington schools for nearly 20 years, I am deeply knowledgeable about the system. Although my children graduated, I continue to work on numerous school-related issues and committees and would bring this experience to the School Committee.

I have taken a very active role in addressing student stress, as a principal author of the Ad Hoc Committee for Youth-at-Risk report and member of the Lexington Community Coalition Steering Committee. I would like the schools to partner with the town and community in finding ways to reduce stress and support social-emotional needs of students.

The school building projects must be done in a responsible, cost-effective manner without negatively impacting educational quality. I would work with colleagues to maintain optimal class sizes and programs while being cognizant of financial impact on taxpayers.

As a Chinese-American raised and educated in the U.S., I can bring a unique multicultural perspective. With our large Asian student population, it is important to build more cultural understanding. My multiple perspectives could be helpful in bridging gaps, fostering cultural understanding, and serving the needs of all students.

I hope to gain your support and encourage you to visit my website at jayforschoolcommittee.com.
